The door to the Focus shut with a comforting thunk as Logan pulled it closed behind him. A quick glance at his phone showed two missed calls from Ben and four texts, each one less amused than the one before. Logan's dinner was now 'in the dog,' apparently. Considering the Fordes didn't have any pets, Logan wasn't quite sure whose dog it was in, but it was in someone's.
Chippy on the way back, then. He dimly recalled there being a Harry Ramsden's nearby somewhere, although he couldn't quite place where.
He was about to type out a quick apology when the screen lit up with an incoming call from a local 01463 number he didn't recognise.
"Logan," he said, pressing the phone to his ear.
The voice on the other end hesitated, caught off-guard by the speed of the response. "Uh, hello, sir. It's Sinead. PC Bell, I mean."
"Sinead. Hello."
"I swung by the station, sir. You weren't there, so I thought... I hope you don't mind me calling? It just seemed like you wanted to ask me something."
She was good.
"Aye. Thanks. It was just a general thing, really. Just..."
He glanced up at the Sinclairs' house, then checked his rear-view mirror, like he might find someone there listening in. There was only one other car parked on the streetâa black Audiâsitting a good forty feet behind him. Someone was in the driver's seat, but short of maybe the Six-Million Dollar Man, nobody could be listening in from that distance.
"I feel bad even asking it, but did you thinkâ"
"That Michelle is a bit touchy-feely with Stuart?"
Logan exhaled, like all his nasty little suspicions had somehow just been vindicated.
"Aye! Exactly. There was a lot of patting and stroking going on there, wasn't there?"
"It's pretty constant, sir, yeah," Sinead agreed. "Caught me off guard a bit to start with, but I think it's maybe just how she is with him. But probably amplified, given the circumstances."
Logan ran his tongue across his teeth. She was probably right, of course. The Sinclairs had told him that Michelle and Stuart had always been close. 'Like brother and sister,' Elaine had said. Emphasised it twice, in fact.
She was comforting the boy, that was all.
Almost certainly.
"The sister's got an alibi for the Sunday, aye?"
"Church in the morning, then Aerial Hoop in the afternoon."
Logan's silence spoke volumes.
"It's a fitness thing, sir. They do it at the leisure centre. And Stuart was streaming online on Twitch from around twelve through until five."
Another silence.
âItâs like TV for gamers. He was broadcasting live most of the day.â
"Right. Aye. Fair enough," Logan said, briefly wondering when he became so completely out of touch with⦠well, everything, it seemed. "And you're probably right about all the physical contact stuff. It's probably nothing. But keep an eye on it, will you?"
"I'm not back in until Sunday, but I've already passed it on," Sinead said. "I'm going with them to Mairi's birthday thing in the afternoon."
Logan wracked his brain for information on a birthday thing, but drew a blank.
"Some of the teachers at the school arranged it.
